Shakespeare is part of American culture. High school students begin studying and acting the plays in 9th grade, usually beginning with Romeo and Juliet. Some students take to Shakespeare like a duck to water, and other students positively can’t stand the plays, mainly because of the perceived Early Modern English language barrier.
Here’s a good lesson I adapted from one of my training teachers in England when I was a student teacher. It invites students to warm up to the language with Early Modern English insults and puns.
